...The word had traveled for many years across the planet. There were those that still knew the language of silence. Many could remember the time before the darkness had fallen all about.
They carried the knowledge before the censorship veil was enforced. Some lit the way like fireflies for those that still could believe and see just enough to carry the hope inside. The master knowledge-carriers were called lightworkers because they held the truth so deeply within, that their light burned brightly the path where all the enlightened knew.
The first to be blinded had been those that had created the darkness that covered the entire planet. The darkness was like a fungus that quietly but steadily grows in strength as it spreads from tree to tree until the entire forest is strangled by its very presence. Gradually, almost everyone was blind to the truth as the darkness grew darker and few even remembered when there had been any light at all.......Late one evening during the hours past sleep and before daylight’s promise to return, Lily Garden got out of bed, smoked a cigarette and started to paint. Not an unusual act, in itself, except that she had never painted before and had no artist tools – no brushes, no paint, no canvas, and no sheets of paper.
Most importantly, she had never been talented enough in art to even pass her drawing class in high school. Even with her medications she had begun to feel that weak cord between her deep despair and complete resignation.
That first night of painting was to change her life in a way she could not have possibly conceived. Lily hunted throughout her kitchen, feverishly searching for tools to paint with. Elmer glue, food-coloring, flour and water mixed, cardboard, knives, spoons and toothbrushes were gathered and her kitchen table became her easel. Her thoughts left her as her hands moved the materials across the cardboard.
Exhausted from her effort at 3:00 A.M., Lily moved the cardboard back and leaned it against the refrigerator. She stepped back across the room and gasped out loud, standing very still for a long time as she stared at the painting and wondered what it meant?
